Sock Size Guide: UK, US and EU Sizes, With a Chart

Sock sizes are simpler than they look. A sock doesn't come in "size 7" the way a shoe does; it comes in a range of shoe sizes it fits. So the only number you really need is your shoe size, and the only hard part is that the world uses three different systems for it.

Here's the chart, how to check your size at home, and what to do when you're buying for someone else.

The conversion chart

India uses UK shoe sizes, so the UK column is your Indian size.

Brands size slightly differently, so treat foot lengths as a guide, not a guarantee. The quick rule: US women's is UK plus two, and US men's is UK plus one.

How to measure your foot

Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, heel touching the wall, with your weight on that foot.
Mark the tip of your longest toe. That's not always the big toe.
Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
Do both feet. Most people have one foot slightly longer. Use the bigger number.
Measure in the evening. Feet swell a little through the day, so evening is when they're at their largest.

Between sizes?

Socks stretch, so being between sizes is rarely a problem. If you're right at the top of a sock's range, the heel may sit slightly short; at the bottom, it may bunch a little. A sock that fits your shoe size in the middle of its range fits best.

Buying socks as a gift when you don't know their size

This is where sock ranges are a gift-giver's best friend.

For most women, our women's socks (UK/India 3–8) cover the majority of adult shoe sizes.
For most men, our men's socks (UK/India 6–11) do the same.
Not sure either way? Look at the shoes they wear most and check the size printed inside the tongue or on the insole, or ask someone who lives with them.
For babies, our baby socks fit 0 to 12 months, so they're a safe bet for a baby shower.

A fun fact for the next quiz night

India may one day have its own shoe sizes. A national survey that 3D-scanned the feet of over 100,000 people found that Indian feet tend to be wider than European and American ones, and in 2024 researchers proposed a new system called "Bha" (for Bharat), with eight sizes and no half sizes. Until it arrives, UK sizes it is.
